Greed is Good, but Your Computers are Incredibly Dated
What a great article by Indie Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont in yesterday’s Common Dreams. His articles always hit the hammer on the nail. A couple highlights:
If you’ve ever wondered why your bank/credit card company is located in Delware or South Dakota:
States used to protect consumers from predatory lenders, but strong state usury laws were obliterated by a 1978 U.S. Supreme Court decision. Justices allowed national banks to charge whatever interest rate they wanted if they moved to a state without an interest rate cap like South Dakota or Delaware.
Why credit unions are better than banks:
15 percent is the maximum that Congress imposed on credit union loans almost 30 years ago when it amended the Federal Credit Union Act…..Unlike their counterparts at the big banks, credit unions are not lining up for hundreds of billions in bailouts. In fact, they’re doing quite well. As Chris Collver, legislative and regulatory analyst for the California Credit Union League recently stated; “It hasn’t been an issue. Credit unions are still able to thrive.”
And for denialists who still believe it’s just government that’s controlling too much of your life and not big corporations*:
Incredible as it may seem, over the last decade the financial sector has invested more than $5 billion in political influence purchasing in Washington. This includes funding some 3,000 lobbyists and huge amounts in campaign contributions.

Government or corporations? My personal viewpoint on who controls too much of us: look up “collusion” in the dictionary: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/collusion

Looks like far right wing congresswoman Michelle Bachman is now officially “Bob Dornan, the Next Generation.” Different part of the country, different gender and appearance, same crackpot, attention-lusting mentality. Michelle grabbed headlines back in the fall election by calling for the media to investigate members of congress, including then Senator Barack Obama, for anti-american bias. Today we read that she is calling President Obama “the enemy:” FULL STORY ON FIREDOGLAKE.COM

- Dick Cheney’s attacks on the Obama Administration is unprecedented. The truth continues to trickle out on Dick the Torture Enthusiast, perhaps he’s getting defensive.
- Our Bill of Rights are still intact somewhat. If we had no liberties in America, would Dick Cheney have been as evil as Hitler and Stalin(to name but a few)?
- 24 is just a TV show. Jack Bauer doesn’t exist. Don’t compare it to reality to justify torturing innocent people in the name of protecting America.
- Meeting goals and personal success makes life worth living. Money is nice. AIG execs, Bernie Madoff and others prove too much money makes you just plain weird.

Greed is not cool, The Fonz will always be cool
- Monday I find out how much the taxes are on my stock dividends. I also co-own a small business. Yet, with great certainty I have been called a socialist by right wing bloggers. Must be a ruse.
- According to the various Law & Order shows, if you are in Central Park, you will either find a dead jogger or you’ll be the dead jogger someone else finds.
- The Octomom is just a another reminder of how very much we all need media circuses. Everyday life is mundane.
- If I’ve learned anything in life, I’ve learned this: be it plutonic, romantic or business, relationships with toxic people always go bad in the end. (read next bullet point)
- A former boss of mine once said this about his problems dealing with a prima donna on our staff: “you can’t win with him. If you were to buy him ice cream, he’d say “how come you didn’t get strawberry.” Toxic.

Chuck Norris: Patriot, Secessionist & no apparent sense of being in duality.
Chuck Norris wants to run for President of Texas, even though Texas is still a state. But if Texas does become an independent nation(as he advocates) then he’s throwing his hat in the ring. If one Chuck can do it, so can another Chuck…
I, Chuck McCoy, am a candidate for President of Rochester. I live in Rochester, NY. I think it’s something like the 57th largest city in the country(I don’t actually know what the exact number is, I mean, who cares?). If Rochester decides to secede from (a) New York state and (b) The United States, then I solidly have my hat in the ring.
I think our Mayor would probably also run and has the experience. But I’ll run a smear campaign. For starters, I’m gong to find what church he worships at and secretly videotape his pastor’s sermons.
And yes, this is a productive way to conduct my life.

Are the greedy. money grabbing days of Wall St. over?
There’s cautious optimism that the so-called 2nd Gilded Age is finally coming to an end. Greed is not good and what’s good for the greediest amongst us is extremely bad for the rest of us. Two events this week: Bernie Madoff said goodbye to his 7 million dollar Town House and hello to a 7/12 by 8 foot prison cell.
And Jon Stewart gave us a public coast to coast spanking of Jim Cramer. Hello Jim? CNBC? We’re all in on the whole scam culture of Wall Street and we’ll all pissed as hell.
Why do so many bigots disguised as Christians hate the Jews? Jesus was a Jew. Not a Southern Baptist preacher, not an elder in the Assembly of God, but a Jew. How can you love someone and make declare them your personal savior, but hate the rest of their family? “But they killed our Lord.” They were supposed to kill him, you moron! What did you want them to do – give him a birthday party? “A cake! Aw, you guys shouldn’t have. You Jews are o-k — and I should know…I’m a Jew myself.”
I also perform standup comedy. When it comes to comedy, swear words are not a substitute for talent. This despite the fact some fortunate people make a good living doing just this. I think Chris Rock is hilarious, but his swear words are comedy additives, not the actual punch lines. Lewis Black doesn’t use as much vulgarity, but is also extremely funny for the same reason – he’s extremely creative. A lot of lesser known comics think swear words make great punch lines. They don’t.
Working a lot is good, especially in this troubled economy. But not working all the time gives one a lot more time to make blog entries. Working all the time is another story. “Oooh, not now, I’m so tired.” BTW, today’s my day off.
If you think life stinks, it does – or it soon will. Self fullfilling prophecy. The old motivational saying is correct: “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re probably right.

Things in Republican bizarro world are nuttier than ever. Rush Limbaugh, an unelected radio loudmouth, has so much sway that republican leaders must beg for his forgiveness if anything they might happen to say about him gets taken the wrong way. The Democrats are promoting him as the de facto leader of the republicans. Now Texas Senator Senator John Cornyn is circulating a petition demanding that the Obama administration confess to a planned out Rush smear: FULL STORY ON CROOKSANDLIARS.COM

as always, coming soon to Fox News
note: I don’t personally hate republicans and anything that any registered republican may possibly stand for. I think they’ve been held hostage by the far right and their failed laizzez-faire policies for too long. They must return their days as a party of moderation, a party once led by the likes of Dwight Eisenhower, William E. Miller and Gerald Ford.

Add South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint to the list of celebrity wingnut ankle biters who can’t accept that the majority voted for change in November. This weekend, anyone who’s anyone spoke at the 2009 CPAC convention. DeMint and other conservative republican big shots used the popular “S” word to describe Obama the Anti-Christ. We’ve come to expect this from the right wing media. But has his ever happened before – a sitting president being accused by prominent members of the opposition of being a socialist? As the old chinese saying goes: “may you live in interesting times.” Supposedly it’s chinese and supposedly it’s actually a curse. Looks like all hell is breaking loose in conservative la la land. Yes, I know it’s tough to lose, but try and deal with it like adults, will ya.
